Metal and Plastic Track

With curtain tracks the choices are between metal or plastic, corded or uncorded, fixed length or extendable, wall (face) fixing or ceiling (top) fixing. Some have the benefit of roller gliders for extra smooth operation, others have glidehooks which cover the track, or standard gliders some of which can be inserted into the chanel at any point whilst in situ. Which of these can be used in bays, can they be cut to size, are they easy to install, which is the most discreet profile, which rail is suitable for heavyweight curtains?
